FOSS Live Specimens

Kindergarten: Animals Two by Two

Please float your goldfish/guppies bag in your aquarium for about 15 to 20 minutes before releasing. If you are not ready to use your aquatic snails, red worms and night crawlers, you may store them in the refrigerator for at least a week. Your aquariums (or any fish container) should have purified drinking water or water (tap) that has been sitting out for a few days.

Grade 2: Life Cycle of a Butterfly

This unit should be started upon arrival. Keep the larvae and food refrigerated upon receipt when teacher is not available. You may also request the redeemable coupon instead of the live shipment of larvae if you are not sure when you might start this unit.

Grade 3: Structures of Life

Keep crayfish in clean drinking wear at all times. Crayfish prefer cool temperatures. You might want to find out your classrooms temperature during the weekend. Anacharis is crayfish food so put your anacharis with your crayfish. You only need enough water to cover just above the crayfish body. When changing your water, please note temperature. Let your water sit in the same room as your crayfish. You may aerate your containers as well, although not necessary.

Grade 4: Ecosystems

Red worms and mealworms can be kept in the refrigerator until ready to use. Elodea, duckweed, aquatic snails and daphnia can be stored in the refrigerator upon receipt if teacher is not available, your aquariums should be already set up and ready to receive your animals at this point. When taking out animals from the refrigerator, again let them sit out for a while next to your aquarium. Chameleons (or geckos) like it warm!!! Keep chameleons hydrated by spraying them once a day with water. (use a water bottle). Also place a small dish of water in their habitat.

Grade 6: Environments

Keep beetles and isopods in a cool area (do not refrigerate). Gammarus can be stored at room temperature. Goldfish, elodea, pond (aquatic) snails and duckweed, see kindergarten and grade 4 instructions.

Note: Your live animals are all sensitive to any temperature change or any bacterial growth. Any dead animals should be taken out of your containers immediately so bacteria will not build up. When you water starts to even "cloud" up slightly, change the water. Replace a third of your water volume until water is clear. Always keep your water clean.

* Refer to your literature that came with your foss kits for more care instructions.

* Please report any animals dead on arrival (doa) within 48 hours. We will replace only. No refunds.
